Week 5 – 3D Print II (PM)

July 29, 2024 1:00 pm - August 2, 2024 4:00 pm STEAMwhiz HQ

Week 5  |  July 29 – Aug 2

Maker II – Minecraft Forge: 3D Printing Adventure- Design & Prototype an Articulating Minecraft Mob

Week 5 – PM | Summer SciTech July 29 – Aug 2 | 1PM – 4PM

Challenge –

How can you combine the realms of design, digital creation, and animation to bring a new Minecraft mob to life?

Your challenge is to use Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools to design an articulating Minecraft mob that introduces a unique character to the Minecraft universe. Once your digital design is complete, embark on the journey of stop-motion animation. How will you use physical figures to recreate the movement and actions of your CAD-designed mob in stop-motion animation? This adventure invites you to be both a digital artist and a stop-motion animator. How can you seamlessly merge the digital and physical worlds to showcase the personality and capabilities of your custom Minecraft mob through the art of animation?

Projects Include –

The “STEAM” behind 3D Printing, Articulation Lab, Figure Fab 3D Print + Design Lab, Stop Motion Animation – Adventures with Mobs

Learning Objectives –

  1. Measurement and Scaling:
    • Understand and apply measurement concepts (e.g., millimeters, centimeters) relevant to 3D printing.
    • Learn to scale 3D models accurately, ensuring proper dimensions for printing.
  2. Geometry and Spatial Reasoning:
    • Identify and use geometric shapes and concepts in 3D modeling and printing.
    • Develop spatial reasoning skills by visualizing and manipulating objects in a three-dimensional space.
  3. Advanced 3D Printing Techniques:
    • Develop proficiency in advanced 3D printing concepts, including multi-material printing, support structures, and printing articulated joints.
    • Explore advanced slicing settings to optimize print quality and efficiency.
  4. Designing Articulating Figures in CAD:
    • Learn to use Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to create detailed and articulated 3D models for figures.
    • Understand the principles of articulation in design, including joint mechanisms and range of motion considerations.
  5. Stop-Motion Animation Basics:
    • Acquire foundational knowledge in stop-motion animation, including frame rates, storytelling through motion, and capturing smooth transitions between frames.
    • Understand the basic equipment and tools needed for stop-motion animation, such as cameras, lighting, and tripods.
  6. Creating a Stop-Motion Animation:
    • Acquire foundational knowledge in stop-motion animation, including frame rates, storytelling through motion, and capturing smooth transitions between frames.
    • Apply stop-motion animation principles to bring the 3D-printed articulated figure to life.
    • Develop skills in frame-by-frame animation, synchronization of movements, and storytelling through the stop-motion medium.

* Pre-requisites:  basic keyboard & mouse skills; bonus pts if you attended Summer Camp Week 1 -or- previous 3D Print lab/class
